Led by the McLean County GIS Consortium, staff from the City of Bloomington, McLean County and the Town of Normal unveiled a user-friendly app to provide information about local road closures in Bloomington, Normal and throughout McLean County.
The McLean County Road Construction application displays current and planned road construction initiated by local entities.
“The creation of this app has been in the works for a while,” explains Crystal Williams, GIS Coordinator for the McLean County GIS Consortium. “McLean County has been using a similar site since 2018. With staff from Bloomington and Normal joining the effort, we will be providing our communities with up-to-date information about road closures.”
The road construction application, which pulls statewide information from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), illustrates local road construction locations, including full closures (red on the map), partial road closures (orange on the map), as well as detours (green on the map).
“Road closures and detours are necessary, but that doesn’t make them any less frustrating,” adds Katherine Murphy, manager of Communications & External Affairs at the City of Bloomington. “With all local government providing closure information collaboratively, the app provides one-stop for the community to learn why and how long roads are planned to be closed.”
The application is available at https://bit.ly/mcleancoroadclosures and also from the City of Bloomington, McLean County Government, McLean County GIS Consortium and Town of Normal websites. The organizations will also link to the application from their respective social media accounts when road closures are updated. Public works, streets and engineering staff from all local organizations will provide timely updates and information.
“This collaboration addresses a need in our community. Road closures affect everyone, regardless of street address. The community has told us they want to know about these impacts,” says Cathy Oloffson, Town of Normal director of Communications & Community Relations. “Local government entities working together efficiently and effectively is good for everyone.”
The application provides statewide information about road impacts from IDOT outside of McLean County and throughout the state. Road construction initiated by utility companies is not available, as those closures often happen in the field and are typically shorter in duration.
