In 2020, Town of Normal secured more than $3.2 million in grants that improved our community in a variety of ways.
The Town received two grants from the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO): Staff secured $450,000 from DCEO for the local CURES program in support of small businesses to address the financial impact of COVID-19. The Fast-Track Grant ($590,000) contributes to fast-tracking planned infrastructure projects around the community.
“We appreciate Town staff working so diligently to secure various grants throughout the year. I am proud to see how these grants will impact the community. Citizens will reap the benefits for years to come in many ways … road improvements, educational opportunities, citizen safety, and so much more” said Chris Koos, Mayor.
The Children’s Discovery Museum (CDM) accumulated over $600,000 in grants. A majority of this comes from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) grant for the installation of the new Luckey Climber exhibit.
The Secretary of State awarded the Library per Capita Grant for $65,000 to Normal Public Library (NPL). This money contributes to expanding access to physical library materials and digital content. A mini-grant of $700 from the Public Policy and Advocacy Office of the American Library Association with sponsorship from Google was used towards the Digimakers Project. As a result of the project, kids and teens ages 10-14 were invited to join a four-week virtual interactive class teaching digital skills.
The CDM and NPL also secured several additional grants which helped create science, technology, engineering, and math (STEAM) programs and activities, in addition to creating literacy and remote learning kits for local schools and community members.
