The Town of Normal named a new Director of Communications and Community Relations, effective Monday, August 24, 2020, per an announcement from City Manager Pam Reece.
“We are extremely pleased Cathy Oloffson will be joining the Town of Normal in this leadership role,” said Reece. “Her professional experience in communications, her passion for the community and her demonstrated commitment to positively impact residents’ lives will be a great asset to the municipality.”
Oloffson will lead the Communications Department and assist the Town in crafting an effective communications and community relations strategy. An active community leader and a native of McLean County, Oloffson has served on the Planning Commission and other Town committees. She currently volunteers for Unit 5 Schools, Little Free Library and the State Farm Holiday Classic. She has volunteered for numerous other community organizations throughout her career.
Oloffson joins the Town after serving as vice president of Development for Easterseals Central Illinois. Prior to joining Easterseals Central Illinois, Oloffson worked at COUNTRY Financial for over 20 years in a variety of internal and corporate communications, public relations, executive communications, media relations and project management roles. Before joining COUNTRY, she worked as a market research analyst at The Pantagraph.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication and a master’s degree in organizational communication, both from Illinois State University. She is a 1999 graduate of Leadership McLean County and in 2007 was recognized as one of Twenty-Under-Forty by the McLean County Chamber of Commerce. In 2010, she was honored by the Bloomington-Normal Association for Women in Communications with the Emily Valluri Professional Development Award.
“Normal is a vibrant, innovative community, and I am proud to call it home. I have lived here for more than 30 years and have been interested in local government since covering the Normal Town Council as a news reporter at Illinois State,” says Oloffson. “This is a natural intersection of my personal interests and professional experience, and I am excited to represent the Town in this leadership role.”
Dan Irvin held the role of Director of Communications, retiring in 2018. Oloffson will fill this new, expanded role as a key member of the Town’s leadership team.
