A passerby called 9-1-1 and reported smoke coming from the residence at 1313 Baugh Drive at 3:26 PM. Upon arrival, the first arriving firefighters had moderate smoke showing from the residence and called for a greater alarm. As a second alarm fire, Bloomington Fire Department responded with an engine company to act as a Rapid Intervention Team for our firefighters as they made entry to fight the fire and search the residence for anyone still inside. Off-duty firefighters were also called in to staff fire stations during the incident.
Fire crews experienced heavy smoke conditions and lots of heat as they made entry through the front door. Simultaneously, crews were stretching a hose line to the back of the residence to attack fire that was extending from a window on the back of the house. The firefighters inside made a quick knock down of the fire, and continued searching the residence.
During the primary search, crews located a victim inside the home. The victim was rapidly pulled from the home by fire personnel and transported by Normal Fire Department Paramedics to Advocate Bromenn Regional Medical Center in critical condition. With the main fire knocked down, and searches of the residence complete, fire crews focused their efforts to extinguishing hot spots and worked to ventilate the smoke from the residence. The home sustained heavy smoke and heat damage throughout, along with water damage in the areas that were affected directly by fire. Windows were broken by heat and by firefighters during ventilation efforts.
There were no injuries to firefighters at the scene. A damage estimate and whether the property is insured is unknown at this time.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Normal Fire Department Investigators.
